Sex in the City : 1953 style

Tonight is the cocktail party for the Blue Mountains Business Awards finalists. I don't have a thing to wear and will start flinging clothes around today to see what goes still goes around my belly. I bought some new knee-high buff coloured boots (on sale from Sportsgirl, not somewhere I usually shop) on the weekend so maybe I can work something out... or look very much like a vague pregnant woman with limited clothing resources/unusual fashion sense!

After that, I am going to The Carrington Hotel for their monthly movie night. Tonight it's 'How to Marry A Millionaire" (1953) and a dessert platter... mmmm! Doesn't get any better with Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable and Lauren Bacall.

This is a favourite comedy of mine, especially as a teenage girl when I had to start wearing glasses. I loved the fact that Marilyn Monroe ends up wearing her glasses rather than being vain and blind in this movie - and finds true happiness with the RIGHT man.

Synopsis:
Nunnally Johnson's Broadway comedy was brought to the big screen by director Jean Negulesco, built around a trio of female stars, Lauren Bacall, Marilyn Monroe, and Betty Grable. They play friends who come up with a plan to find and marry rich men. They rent a lavish penthouse and use it as their launching pad to lure men with money in the bank. But each eventually finds that love is more important that material possessions, though it takes a while. One running joke has Monroe so insecure about her looks that she refuses to wear glasses, though this means she bumps into furniture and walls. The other has Bacall rejecting suitor Cameron Mitchell because he doesn't wear a tie, assuming this means he's low-class when, in fact, he's the Donald Trump of 1954. Pre-feminist comedy captures the mindset of an era in which women's identities were based on the men they married. It has its moments, but much of the humor seems dated, though its take on sexual politics is occasionally acute.

The humans are dead...

Who doesn't love robots?

Someone sent me this fabulous link to the cutest robots - and you can own them! They are made from found and recycled objects in the USA. The website is lovely to look at too!

Meet Nowaday ($155 USD). He enjoys eating, particularly when it comes to bacon and sausage, his two favourite fried meats. He meticulously maintains an ant farm and likes to create cut-off shorts from jeans found on the cheap at thrift stores. He's a big fan of Erector Sets and canasta and studies probability theory in his free time.

The title is a reference for Flight of the Conchords fans...

Finalist!

Yay, I just got the telephone call. I am a finalist in the Blue Mountains Business Awards in all four categories I entered. Next Tuesday is the finalist cocktail party then the big awards night is 17th October at the Fairmont Resort in Leura.

I am sooooo excited! Wish I could celebrate with some drinks!

Busy bee today

My girlfriend Jess bought me these cute little things from the UK - bit of a theme happening. Top left is a vintage sewing kit!

Photos of Nelly for Waggle's dog gallery. I bought her a new spunky red & pink polkadot collar (she even matches the cushion on the lounge) from their site. I have a dress in red & pink polkadots too! You can't see her collar in the second photo as she has a bit of a problem with her middle-aged 'waddle' neck!

I rearranged my work studio this morning. Since I'm back at home at 6am, after dropping Steven to the station to go to work, I start pretty much straight away myself. By midday I am beat! I've tided everything up and moved 2 heavy desks around (naughty pregnant lady). I love the new fabric Mum gave me (flung over the back of the chair).

I love this tea towel - it sums me up perfectly although I'm actually not a messy person... just in my head!

Things...

Yesterday I went to Lisa's place for delicious carrot & coriander soup - and look what she gave me as well! This is 2m of Florence Broadhurst fabric and just DIVINE...

I also wanted to share the gorgeous baby girl's retro rocket outfit I bought from Brusselsprouts on madeit. I can't wait for our new little baby girl to be wearing this when she is born in the heat in January! Isn't it cute?

On another note, today I went to get my haircut. It was getting really long, really daggy and I wasn't sure what to do with it. I have now got a gorgeous chin length bob that is so light and easy! I can't believe how much hair there was.

No more mountain hillbilly here!

New ballerina bags and cravings

The last 4 ballerina bags are finally up on my site as promised weeks ago! I just love this fabric (above) for Ganges. I have 2, each with its own unique and fabulous button on the front pocket. The gold sparkly 60's one at the top is pretty cute.

Every day I get up after 5am to get my partner to the station to go to work. He's now working in the city which is 2 hours each way on the train. It's not so bad for him as he is a bookaholic so can read, but it's a killer for me to be up at that time of the morning then back to the station 7:15pm!

I usually just start working from about 6am so by 1pm I'm feeling I'm just about ready to finish. This seems so weird when everyone is just having their lunch and halfway through the day!

I'm trying not to work too hard, and forcing myself to slow down and stop the ridiculous 12 hour days of old. Anyway, I can't do them when I'm pregnant. The vagueness, sleepiness and hunger usually stops me.

Here is my current list of food cravings (these do change but I am pretty fixated):
Banana Paddlepops - bought in packs of 10 (just for convenience.. hee hee)
Snickers & Picnics (definately NOT a low fat snack. I only ever eat 1 but could easily eat 2-3 in a sitting)
Cheese and avocado on toast (all melted and gooey)
Pineapple
Oranges/grapefruits/any citrus
Pizza

I love my new banner

My new display banner arrived yesterday. The picture of Belle came out really clear and it's really pretty visually... and it's massive at 1.8m tall! (I kept a bit of the doorway on the right to give you an idea). As long as its not windy, I will take this to Leura Markets next month but otherwise it will definately be at the Lindesay xmas gift fair.

Plus... there are more ballerina bag styles uploaded to my site. I was supposed to have them all uploaded this week but just can't keep up with it all. Check out the new styles!

Dolls and other girly things...

I have never considered myself very 'girly' but do love a doll. This photo of me (on left) with my sister and our favourite baby dolls does look particularly girly though... we were dressing up in some 60's nightdresses with our dolls. My grandparents bought these for us specially for Christmas one year (don't you just love their wallpaper?).

So I started thinking, "oh, how fun, I get to buy my little girl dolls" when she is born (and a little older). Here is some fun ones I have found so far on etsy but I still love that whiffy smell of 80's plastic dolls when they come out of boxes.

Do dolls still smell like that? I think the last doll purchased in our household was my sister's awful Cabbage Patch Kid (I was too old for them). I can't stand Bratz dolls (they look like porn stars) but still love classic Barbie dolls with 60's make-up.

Years ago, when in New York, I bought a Gene Doll for myself from FAO Schwartz. She is beautiful with 50's red catseye sunglasses, full skirt, stockings and handbag, and looks just like Jayne Mansfield (one of my idols).

Evening Gala Barbie : FAO Schwartz $50 USD (yes, she's new!)

Now, if you haven't been to FAO Schwartz, you are really missing out. It is absolutely mindblowing! I couldn't control myself. There were levels and levels of toys all categorised so there was a Barbie level, Star Wars, etc.

My grandmother had a stack of vintage Barbies we used to play with, complete with Skipper, Ken, and all the gang plus loads of accessories. She sold them all in the 80's which is a shame. She had, as a girl, a dolls house that had working lights too... oooh doll's houses!

Maybe I am girlier that I thought.

White teeth

Don't you just hate going to the dentist? I have just come back. My front tooth was cracked and needed a touch up on the front (it's capped). After HCF pitched in it was still $137. Wowee! I think I chose the wrong profession.

But the maddest thing of all... I came back and scoffed 2 chocolates that my girlfriend brought me over from the UK. No, not little chocolates from a box, 2 large, hefty, days worth of calories per bar kinda chocolates! Disgusting!

On another note... here is some handbags uploaded to my site: Donatella, Sally Sue Stripes and Sonia (Sonia is on sale/old stock).

Tomorrow night, the Gussy Up Gals are getting together at my house for a get together. No men or children, just a nice catch up with pizza and tv! Maybe we will even get creative with some new ideas!

Bill Bailey

How exciting! Tonight we see Bill Bailey in the city. I last saw him about 9 years ago and I had tears running from my eyes from start to finish. He is so very funny!

For those of you who don't know who he is - remember Manny in Black Books?

This is a special treat as we are also going to stay in town overnight, and grab some dinner out. It's all part of our little bursts of 'babymoon' experiences - I keep getting told by people to get fun treats in NOW, before the baby arrives! So this is part of it...

Another ballerina bag uploaded!

Marcie ballerina bag has been uploaded today! She is a gorgeous vintage 60's recycled heavy linen print (never used it seems) and I have sewn on a lovely big grey 50's button to the front to close the pocket. Interior is in recycled vintage pink gingham check.

There is another 6 styles being uploaded this week...

New clutches on their way to Texas

Finally finished 2 lovely clutches for Emily in Houston, Texas. She has 5 clutches being sent to her today as gifts for her bridesmaids. These ones above (Ryoko - top & Maxie - bottom) were finished this morning. I just love Maxie, it's such great fabric!

Baby bump

The bump is getting bigger! Here is a photo I took of my baby bump on Monday at 22.5 weeks (23 weeks on Thursday). It's getting bigger, more movement and harder to get around. Little baba ghanoush likes disco dancing all night it seems, which wakes me up and reminds me she is there.

My 82 year old grandma didn't understand the baba ghanoush joke and thought it was a name we were seriously considering.

Lower back pain seems to be my new best friend. Walking compounds it but yoga is great. I got a massage ($75 for an hour... eek!) so don't think that will be happening each week but it completely took the pain away for 2 days. I bought a wheat pack on the weekend and can't understand how I lived before without one!

Scarf sale now on!

Time to grab a gorgeous scarf with some of them over 50% off!

Friday

Its raining, raining, raining outside and I can't wait for Spring to really hit the Mountains. Nelly, my dog, has come in saturated which means wet dog smell in her bed. Yuck! Luckily I am working away in my separate studio room!

Don't you just love this fabric? I scored it yesterday. It's a sort of heavy cotton upholstery fabric with a fabulous moth screenprint in blues and black on white background. I can't decide what to make with it first!

This custom designed ballerina bag is finished for Danielle this morning. Its bigger than my normal sized ballerina bags and has a separate section inside for her laptop which closes up with a vintage button when not in use. Made from vintage velvet and cotton with a divine 50's coat button on the front pocket.

Update: I did have some exciting news... so exciting that my blood pressure was going up, so for the good of my pregnancy, I bowed out. I was supposed to go to Melbourne next week for 'Fashion Unearthed' with a magazine. It would have been fabulous and I am sorry that its not good timing for me!

Pssst...

More custom bags happening but there is another exciting little adventure in the pipeline which I will release if it all comes off... means dashing about last minute interstate, but hey, I seem to work well that way!

My Mum came up to the Mountains to visit and of course we had to do a session at Common Ground today. It's such a fabulous cafe and so, so reasonable.

Hykie emailed me about her new custom clutch and I have to share it (see previous post):

Hi Kara,

It arrived yesterday, and I could not be happier with it. I love the fabric pattern we ended up going with, it's just stunning. Thank you so much for the bag and for the whole process as well. It was so fun picking out materials and knowing that it's a one-of-a-kind bag.

Some friends of mine are absolute bag fanatics and will definitely love what you do!!

Cheers,
Hykie

Hykie's custom clutch

It's 'custom crazy' around here at the moment. I have quite a few I have to do but it's such fun to be putting together something special for someone out there that I have never met!

Hykie wanted a bold geometric and this 60's heavy cotton print doesn't fail to please. I also have this in a rusty red colourway and have lots of ideas for the 2 colours... mmmm...

I decided this clutch didn't need a button to finish. It's just so bold and fab that it doesn't need any further entrance!

This clutch is heading out to Hykie today.

I love Lucy

Yesterday I felt like sewing. I have been so busy but feel like I haven't gotten anything new online recently and wanted to do something different. I had some groovy pink vinyl handles that I have been meaning to use, so Lucy was created around these! I have a big piece of red felt too so wanted to add a big love heart... so girly...

Lucy carry-all is made with a recycled 60's heavy cotton bright dress and contrasted with recycled exclusive Liberty floral upholstery. The straps are designed to not go over your shoulder, but to be carried in your hand.

I have added some pretty embroidered ribbon, 4 recycled buttons on each handle and a HUGE red felt love heart on the front.
